A stage for everyone

Indy Drag Theatre was conceived between Drew Bryson (Blair St. Clair) and Alyjah Duff (April Rosé) with the idea of merging theatre and drag in Indianapolis. That idea has grown into this wonderful organization. It is our hope to bring Hoosiers together by offering a safe space to become immersed in queer culture for both artists and audiences.

Drag is an artform that has always been a part of theatre, and allows people to play characters of any gender. We honor that tradition with what we do today, creating opportunities for for all types of gender expression in any role.  There is drag in everyone, and drag is for everyone.

Under the costuming and wigs, we are Hoosiers with stories to share. This stage gives us the space to share those stories with you. This story is told through lip-synched performance, which may be something new to theatre-goers, but is part of the tradition of drag performance.

We hope that you enjoy this unique theatrical experience, and we invite you to be part of our community both on and off stage.

  • OMIGOD, OMIGOD YOU GUYS! It’s...blonder!

Indy Drag Theatre is thrilled to bring Elle Woods back to the stage for a revamp of our flagship production, “Legally Blonde”.

In 2022, the brainchild of April Rose and Blair St. Clair, aptly branded “Bootleg Broadway”, had just wrapped its first modest production of Wicked right down the street. The crescent moon stage barely held 8 performers, a smoke machine, and a precarious ladder situation, but the energy was palpable, and the potential of “Bootleg Broadway” was bursting at its rhinestoned seams.

With the confidence of a perky diva on her way to Harvard, April and Blair approached the District Theatre with a vision for Indy Drag Theatre and a full-length drag parody production of Legally Blonde. Just a few months later, the curtains opened and IDT dazzled theater-goers and drag lovers alike. We’ve been sharing the magic of queer storytelling at this beloved locale ever since.

“Legally Blonder” is the story of an optimistic, romantic gal who pursues her love all the way to Harvard Law School, despite a lifetime of the “dumb blonde” stereotype trailing behind her. Her journey doesn’t just lead her back to her man; instead, she unlocks the power of being underestimated and realizes her own potential as a lawyer, a lover, and a fierce blonde babe. All of us suffer the perceived (and real) limitations of stereotypes. We are often misjudged as artists, as queer people, or as someone that doesn’t quite fit the mainstream mold. But Elle Woods, the Delta Nus, and even Warner know that we are more than the butt of a dumb blonde joke. We’re bursting with potential; we’re stylish and smart; we’re community-builders, choreographers, lawyers, and leaders.

Thanks to the District Theatre, April and Blair, and our audiences here today, IDT’s world (and budget!) has expanded, and what better way to showcase it than with a fierce Y2K makeover, heart-pumping choreo, and the lessons we’ve learned as a growing nonprofit organization.

Grab your smartest-looking glasses, take a seat, and enjoy Legally Blonder: A Drag Parody Musical. We’re so glad you’re here.
